About Arachova

Arachova is a mountain village situated at the foot of Mount Parnassus at an altitude of 950m. in Viotia prefecture and is located approximately 160 Km from Athens. Beautiful stone houses and narrow streets fountains are the first things a visitor sees.
The name is derived from the South Slavic orah, walnut, and denotes a place planted with walnut trees.

Nature

The area around Arachova is mainly grasslands and rocky landscape with a few bushes. It sits on a mountain which is located in the south and the Parnassus mountains in the north. It sits above the valley where a river flows to Livadeia and the Cephissus River.
Two highest points of Parnassus is Liakura (Likoria) 2.457 m and Gerondovrahos of 2.435 m. Between two these peaks, and also in a crevice of Arnovrisi there are two famous mountain-skiing centres - Fterolaka and Kelarija operate today. One of the best in Greece.
The centres are at height of 1600-2300 m, of 14 km have 13th lifts and 20th lines, the general extent.

Infrastructure

Арахова, despite of rapid tourism development, has kept the traditional customs, offering simultaneously all conveniences and entertainments which its visitors require.
If you get here on Easter you can see with your own eyes three-day celebration of the Panigiraki. Yet there is the reviving of the fight of Arachova against the Turks.
The cult of St. George in Arachova lost in time and linked to the legends, traditions, songs and history. The Glorious Church of St. George with ancient marbles impressed foreigners in the years of Ottoman rule.
The area is filled with ancient monuments and artifacts, there are lots of historical routs and rich field for archaeologists.
The Cave Korykeion is mentioned not only in myth, but the world of antiquity and writers. The name sends us to ancient myths and is translated as Paradise. The number of stalachtites and stalagmites create fairytale forest in style of "abstract art".
